Taking Turns

Help your child with cultivate and expand their story telling skill with this activity.

Learning to take turns in story telling helps your child by building spoken language skills, teaching how to sequence a story as well as learn to work with others.

What to Do

With your child, make up a story for the two of you to tell together, taking turns saying one sentence at a time.

*  For a young child, choose a real life story so they have personal background to draw upon.
*  For an older child you my decide to use a real life subject or a subject that will create a fictional story.

Begin by deciding on a topic, such as fairies, pirates or your recent trip to grandma's house.

Say the first sentence: "Once upon a time a pirate lived in . . ." Let you child continue the story with the second sentence.

Continue taking turns with your child making up and telling parts of the story until you decide to end it—maybe after eight or ten sentences.

Take turns beginning and finishing a story. Ask other family members and friends to join in.  This is the perfect activity for a car ride.  Get everyone in the car involved!
