This month the educational product we are recommending is a music CD.
The CD is Singin' in the Bathtub by John Lithgow. You may be
wondering what is so educational about a music CD. Well, one of my
favorite songs from my childhood is on this CD and it is great for helping
children learn number sense.
John Lithgow Sings Inchworm

Lyrics:
Two and two are four
Four and four are eight
Eight and eight are sixteen
Sixteen and sixteen are thirty-two
Inchworm, inchworm
Measuring the marigold
You and your arithmetic
You'll probably go far
Inchworm, inchworm
Measuring the marigold
Seems to me you'd stop and see
How beautiful they are
My own children quickly grew to love this song and ask for me to sing it
to them almost every night. I watched my children use this song to
increase their understanding of numbers. My four year old son will
hold up and count his fingers as I sing the song. My six year old
daughter will use the song to figure out more complex problems quickly.
For example, she will say that since she knows that 8 and 8 are 16, then 8
and 9 must be 17.
The whole CD is a lot of fun and you can hear excerpts from it here:
