Tell Me Thursday – So Happy Together

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Yesterday was Wordless Wednesday and the picture I shared was one that I took on their last day off from school.  Their relations ship has really been developing wonderfully lately.  On this particular day they play together for hours without a single argument.

They were playing together in Hannah’s room for a very long time and when I check on them they very proudly showed me their space ship creation.  This was built using their Cranium Super Fort which they received over a year ago.  This toy was a gift over a year ago.  It was my idea because my daughter was constantly taking the blankets from her bed, dragging them downstairs and them using the couch cushions to build a fort.

They had a blast with the fort kit this day.  As a mom, it feel so good to see my kids working and playing together so well.

Happy Birthday Lego!

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Did you know that yesterday marked the 50th birthday of the Lego brick.  Legos are one of our most favorite toys here at our house.  My kids, and hubby, play for hours and hours.  That is probably the only toy that I can say that about.

Just after Christmas I wrote about the Lego building session that the kids and hubby had.  The kids’ big gift this year was a Star Wars Lego set.  Besides that set all of or other Legos are from my husband’s childhood.  Lego prides itself in the fact that all of the lego brick from over the past 50 years work together.

Did you kjow that over 400,000,000 children and adults will play with Legos this year!

Happy Birthday Lego and here’s to many more!

Thursday Thinker Answer – How many hand shakes?

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Yesterday’s Thursday Thinker involved people in a room shaking hands. I mentioned that if your child was having a difficult time coming up with a way to solve the problem that you could guide them by suggesting drawing a picture or diagram.

Here is the solution to the problem done in pictures.

I hope that you can see from the diagram that there would be 15 hand shakes. Do you figure this out a different way? Let me know how by leaving a comment.

Tell Me Thursday

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

For yesterday’s Wordless Wednesday I shared two pictures of my daughter.  These were taken this past summer on a day that she decided to dress up while creating fairy houses.

Last year, the author Tracy Kane visited my daughter’s school.  She is that author of the series Fairy Houses.  That author’s visit really inspired Hannah.  She spent many hours and days creating different place for fairys to dwell.  This was not only in our yard, but at the school play ground, on vacation and at any park that we went to.  To build a fairy house you must only use natural materals, so these locations were perfect becase she could always find brances, leaves, acorns, pincones and other materials to build with.

Since the cold and snow has hit she has not been building more fairy houses, but just this weekend she came up with an idea.  She has started collecting materials for building fairy houses and is packaging them into boxes.  The next time we have a tag sale she wants to sell her “Fairy House Kits” for $1 and donate the money she earns to a charity.  We have not discussed where she would like to donate to yet, but it will be an opportunity to have a good discussion.  I am looking forward to that.

Thursday Thinker – How Many Hand Shakes?

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Bob, Brenda, Jack, Jill, John and Jane are in a room. Each person shakes hands with every other person exactly one time. When Bob shakes hands with Brenda, Brenda is also shaking hands with Bob. That counts as one hand shake.

How many hand shakes will their have been when everyone is finished?

Note: Drawing a picture or diagram often helps to solve this type of problem. If you child is stuck, you can make that recommendation.

Feel free to post your answers and how your child came to their solution.
