Women’s History Month

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

March is National Women’s History month. Many woman made significant contributions to our world in science, literature, math, politics and much more. One writer that I have loved sharing with my children is Laura Ingalls Wilder. Her writing style is very engaging and easily holds the attention of children. She lead a very adventurous life that your children will enjoy learning about.

The life of Laura Ingalls Wilder is so different than the life out children know. What my own children found unbelievable is that what their own grandparents were children Laura Ingalls Wilder was alive. Knowing that really helped my kids understand how much and how quickly the world has changed.

Here are some activities based on the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Happy Birthday Laura Ingalls Wilder

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

Today is the birthday of Laura Ingalls Wilder, so in her honor I put together 4 activities that you can do with you child.  The activities include cooking, pioneer play, a writing activity and a little science.

We have been reading her literature at our house for quite some time.  We started with the Little House Chapter Books.  These are books taken from parts of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s collection of novels and are rewritten for younger children.  It was a great introduction to her works.

Once my daughter reached the end of first grade we started reading the full set of novelsstarting with Little House in the Big Woods.  By the time second grade started she was fully enthralled by the books and flying through them herself.  They truly are inspiring stories that are written with great visual detail.  They are a wonderful way to share a little history with your child.

The Day After Christmas

I just wanted to share a day after Christmas picture.  The big gift this year was this Star Wars Lego set.  Hubby and the kids worked on putting this together for over 3 hours straight.  Fun times.

‘Tis the Season

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

This weekend we were very busy around here trying to finish up getting ready for the holidays.  The kids and I got to spend some fun time together making cut-out sugar cookies.  We are going to give a bunch to their teachers and made some especially for them.  You can see there are music notes for the music teachers and some different sports ones for the PE teacher.

I thought I had a paint brush cookes cutter that we would use for the art teacher, but I was wrong.  I am going to have to think of something different for her, maybe figure out a way to make my own cookie cutter.
